Linen GSM Explained: Choosing Weight for Shirting, Dresses and Table Linen

GSM is the single most useful number in a linen specification, and the one most often left out of a brief. It means grams per square metre - the weight of one square metre of the fabric - and it tells you more about how a linen will look, drape, wear and launder than almost anything else you could specify.

This is a reference page. It covers what each weight band is for, what GSM does not tell you, how finishing changes it, and precisely what to write on a tech pack.

The weight bands

Linen weight bands, their hand, and what each is typically used for. Bands overlap: finish and weave construction shift the boundaries.

A useful anchor: a standard cotton T-shirt is around 180 GSM. So linen shirting at 165 GSM feels familiar in substance while being far more breathable, and 250 GSM table linen is noticeably heavier than anything in most people's wardrobe.

Choosing by product

Shirting

150-190 GSM, and if you only take one number from this page, take 165. It has enough body to hold a collar stand and a placket without interfacing doing all the work, and it is light enough to be worn in genuine heat. Below 150 the shirt gets translucent and the collar collapses; above 200 you are making an overshirt whether you meant to or not.

For hot-climate ranges - Australian summer, Gulf markets, resort - drop to 140-160. For a shirt-jacket or an overshirt meant to hold structure, go 190-220.

Dresses

140-200 GSM for most. The decision is about drape: a fluid, gathered or bias-cut dress wants the lower end, where linen falls rather than stands. A structured shift, a shirt-dress or anything with a defined silhouette wants 180-220, where the fabric holds a line. Wrap dresses sit in the middle, around 170.

Trousers

200-260 GSM. Trousers are the product where brands most often under-specify. Lightweight linen trousers bag at the knee and seat within a season, and the fault is nearly always the weight, not the construction. Wide-leg styles can go lighter than tailored ones because there is less tension on the fabric.

Table linen

190-250 GSM for napkins and tablecloths, 250-320 for placemats and runners. Table linen has a second requirement most apparel does not: it gets laundered hard and often, particularly if it is going to hospitality. Below 180 GSM napkins feel thin and crease without recovering. The 200-230 band is where most of our kitchen linen and home textiles sit, and it is a reliable default.

Bags

280-400 GSM. A tote that will carry weight needs a heavy base cloth, and this is one place where going heavier rarely hurts the product. Our tote range is built at the upper end for that reason.

What GSM does not tell you

This is the part that separates a specification from a wish. Two fabrics at an identical 180 GSM can behave completely differently.

  • Yarn count. A fine yarn woven densely and a thick yarn woven openly can land on the same weight and look nothing alike. Fine-yarn linen is smoother and more even; thick-yarn linen has the slubby, textured character many brands actually want. Specify the character you want, not just the weight.
  • Weave construction. Plain weave, twill, herringbone and basketweave at the same GSM differ in drape, opacity and how they take a crease.
  • Finish. The single biggest variable in how a linen feels. The same greige cloth can be delivered crisp, softened, stonewashed or enzyme-washed, and those four hand-feels are further apart than a 40 GSM weight difference.
  • Blend. Linen-cotton and linen-viscose blends at the same GSM drape differently and crease less. If your customer complains about creasing, the answer is often a blend or a finish rather than a weight change.

How washing and finishing change the number

GSM is not fixed between the loom and the shop floor, and this trips up brands who specify a greige weight and receive a finished fabric that measures lighter.

Finishing reduces weight. Garment washing, stonewashing and enzyme softening remove loose fibre and relax the structure. Expect a modest reduction, commonly in the region of 2-5% depending on the process and its intensity. Heavier washing means softer hand and lower finished weight.

Shrinkage is the bigger effect. Untreated linen commonly shrinks 3-7% on first wash, and it shrinks more in length than in width. This is normal fibre behaviour, not a defect, but it has to be designed for. There are two ways to handle it: pre-shrink the fabric before cutting, or build the shrinkage allowance into the pattern. Pre-shrinking is more predictable and is what we would normally recommend for anything where fit matters.

Interaction: shrinkage raises GSM. A fabric that shrinks pulls the same yarn into a smaller area, so the finished weight per square metre goes up even as total weight comes down. This is why you must state which GSM you are specifying.

What to write on the tech pack

Six lines. This is the whole of it, and getting these right removes most of the ambiguity that causes a second sampling round.

  1. GSM, with a tolerance, on the finished fabric. For example: "185 GSM ±5%, finished". Woven fabric is a natural product and an exact figure is not achievable; ±5% is the normal commercial tolerance. Saying "finished" rather than "greige" removes the single commonest misunderstanding.
  2. Fibre composition by weight, in descending order. You need this for UK and US labelling law anyway, and it drives customs classification.
  3. Weave construction - plain, twill, herringbone - and yarn character if it matters to you (fine and even, or slubby and textured).
  4. Finish. Crisp, softened, stonewashed, enzyme-washed. Be specific: "soft handle" means different things in different factories.
  5. Shrinkage tolerance and whether the fabric is pre-shrunk. For example: "pre-shrunk, residual shrinkage max 3% warp and weft".
  6. Fabric width, because it drives cutting efficiency and therefore your cost per garment.

Two more worth adding where relevant: colourfastness requirements - to washing, to rubbing, and to light, which matters far more for a Southern Hemisphere or Gulf range than a Northern European one - and any restricted substances standard your own customers require. A note on European flax

The linen we source is woven from flax grown in Western Europe - principally the coastal belt running through northern France, Belgium and the Netherlands, where the maritime climate suits the crop and it is grown without irrigation. That matters for weight consistency as well as provenance: long, strong, evenly graded fibres spin into more consistent yarn, and consistent yarn is what lets a mill hit a GSM target within tolerance run after run.

The number is a starting point

Everything above is a guide, and a guide is not a substitute for touching the cloth. Two linens at the same GSM from different mills, with different yarn and different finishing, are different fabrics. This is genuinely a material you should not commit to on a screen.

Frequently asked questions

What GSM is best for a linen shirt?

For most shirting, 150-190 GSM. Around 165 GSM is the safe default: enough body to hold a collar and a placket, light enough to wear in heat. Go to 140-150 GSM for a very lightweight summer shirt or a hot climate, and up to 190-200 GSM for an overshirt or a structured shirt-jacket meant to hold its shape.

What is the difference between GSM and thread count?

GSM measures the weight of one square metre of fabric in grams. Thread count counts threads per inch. They describe different things and neither substitutes for the other. For linen, GSM is far more useful, because linen yarns vary enormously in thickness - two fabrics with the same thread count can differ by 80 GSM and feel nothing alike. Thread count is a meaningful metric mainly for fine cotton sheeting, where yarn thickness is more consistent.

How do I convert GSM to ounces per square yard?

Divide GSM by 33.9. So 170 GSM is about 5 oz per square yard, and 250 GSM is about 7.4 oz. American specifications often use ounces, so this conversion is worth knowing if you work with both UK and US partners. Be careful with "ounces" quoted without a unit area, which is ambiguous.

Does linen get lighter after washing?

Slightly. Garment washing, stonewashing or enzyme softening typically removes a small percentage of weight, usually in the region of 2-5%, while also softening the hand and relaxing the weave. More significant is shrinkage: untreated linen commonly shrinks 3-7% on first wash. Both effects need to be accounted for at the pattern stage, which is why the finished-fabric GSM and the shrinkage tolerance both belong in your tech pack.

What GSM should table linen be?

Napkins and tablecloths sit comfortably at 190-250 GSM: enough weight to hang properly and survive commercial laundering, not so heavy that napkins will not fold crisply. Placemats, runners and anything meant to hold structure go higher, 250-320 GSM. Below about 180 GSM table linen tends to feel insubstantial and creases without recovering.
